The Lie We’re Told About Safety

My mother was not reckless.

She was grieving.

She was trying to be responsible.

She was told that owning was better than renting. She was told that markets recover. She was told that her portfolio was “appropriately positioned.” She signed documents she did not fully understand because the man explaining them sounded confident and drove the right car and lived in the right house.

That was enough.

What she did not understand was that “moderately aggressive” is not a personality description. It is a volatility exposure.

What she did not understand was that leverage magnifies downturns.

What she did not understand was how commissions are paid whether you win or lose.

From $400,000 to roughly $100,000 in what felt like a blink.

And here’s the part most people never confront:

The system didn’t malfunction.

It operated exactly as designed.

Fees were collected.
Forms were signed.
Liability was transferred back to the client.

“You understood the risks.”

That sentence is devastating when you didn’t.
